Having survived a long and desperate adventure in the Great South Sea, Captain Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin return to England to very different circumstances. For Jack it is a happy homecoming, at least initially, but for Stephen it is disastrous his little daughter appears to be autistic, incapable of speech or contact, while his wife, Diana, unable to bear this situation, has disappeared, her house being looked after by the widowed Clarissa Oakes.

Much of The Commodore takes place on land, in sitting rooms and in drafty castles, but the roar of the great guns is never far from our hearing. Aubrey and Maturin are sent on a bizarre decoy mission to the fever-ridden lagoons of the Gulf of Guinea to suppress the slave trade. But their ultimate destination is Ireland, where the French are mounting an invasion that will test Aubrey's seamanship and Maturin's resourcefulness as a secret intelligence agent.

The subtle interweaving of these disparate themes is an achievement of pure storytelling by one of our greatest living novelists.

The Commodore Vol Book 17 (Audible Audio Edition) Patrick O'Brian Ric Jerrom Audible Studios Books Reviews

Unlike Forrester O'Brian has really done his homework. His books are really informative.
Forrerster follows the straight Tory ticket and O'Brian, does not.
Of course the Hornblower series started in the thirties when England still had an empire. The Aubrey/Mathurin series on the other hand started in 1969 when England had lost its empire and democracy had become respectable.
Although all of the books in the series have been excellent, this was one the best. The tales are fresh, interesting and spell-binding at times. This series has been the most well-written and authentic of any of the historical novels I have read. Patrick O'Brien is a genius in captivating a reader and continuing to hold him captive throughout the entire story. I would recommend reading any or all of the Aubrey-Maturin series.
Love Patrick O'Brian books. Can't wait from one to the next to find out what Stephen and Jack will be into next. Best to read them in sequence as they were written since one leads into the next and references to past books are made. However, one can enjoy just one as well. Lots to learn about life in the 1800's during the time of the Napoleonic wars. About sea life and warfare. About the life on land. About English politics.
This one has all you want. Intrigue, nautical detail, thrilling battle scene, great guns in such vivid detail you can almost hear them, and a masterful surprise ending.
The series continues to be exciting. I cannot read fast enough. I am ready for the next volume. Read on!
I would recommend this book to anyone who loves anyone who loves historical fiction based on actual history.
It's wonderfully written in the language of the times...England of the 1800's.
the contiuing tale of Captain Jack Aubrey and his constant friend Stephen Maturin.
I would tell people to start at book 1 and read all the books. Patrick O'Brian has the ability to make you set sail in a time machine and feel the salt spray and smell the grit of exploding gunpowder and chew your nails.
don't miss this awesome adventure!
This is my second time through the 20-book series. It's a frequent companion and an alternative train of thought that stays with me to fill the dull moments. O'Brian offers a singularly personable and detailed perspective of people and times in the Napoleonic Era of waning British imperialism. He must have used the navy logs for colloquial and logistical details. This is as close to time travel as I'll get in my time.

's delivery is wonderfully prompt and well-packaged. If you intend to read them all, then the best savings are clearly by getting the entire series in one buy. Beware that different Norton series cover art is offered at different times -- what is offered now does not match the series images offered 18 months ago. WYSIWYG. You may have to hunt in other places to get matching cover art if the series is bought over a lengthy period.
I have read all 20 books in this series twice (and more,) plus listened to the audiobooks twice, and read "21" once. It is one of the best series ever written. Five+ stars.
